About
Tapo MCP is an unofficial, community-built MCP server by Mihai Dinculescu, who also wrote the open-source tapo library. It isn't made by TP-Link. It finds the Tapo devices on your home network and lets your agent switch them, check on them and read their sensors and energy data. It controls real devices in your home: plugs, lights and power strip sockets switch for real when your agent asks. What you can do with it - List your Tapo devices, including the sockets on a power strip and the sensors on a hub - Turn plugs, lights and power strip sockets on or off, and set a light's brightness or colour - Check a device's state, such as whether a light is on - Read the last day of temperature and humidity from T310 and T315 sensors, and recent events from hub sensors such as the S200 button - See energy use and power draw from energy-monitoring plugs (P110, P110M, P115, P304M, P316M) - Take a snapshot from a Tapo camera, and read the detections stored on its SD card How it connects - It runs on your own network as an HTTP server, from the maker's Docker image (ghcr.io/mihai-dinculescu/tapo-mcp) or on Kubernetes. Start it with the command in the maker's README, then add its address to your agent. - It needs your Tapo account email and password (TAPO_MCP_USERNAME, TAPO_MCP_PASSWORD) and the network to search (TAPO_MCP_DISCOVERY_TARGET, such as 192.168.1.255). Camera snapshots also need the camera account you set in the Tapo app. - The Docker image listens on every address, so it won't start without an API key in TAPO_MCP_API_KEY. Your agent connects to http://localhost:3000/ and sends that key as a Bearer token. - Finding devices needs host networking (--network host), which Docker Desktop on macOS and Windows doesn't offer. Good to know - The maker also publishes a tapo skill for OpenClaw on ClawHub that uses a running Tapo MCP server.
