About
Redis's own MCP server, run on your machine as a local MCP server. It gives your agent a natural-language interface to a Redis database, so it can store and read data, work with Redis data structures and run vector search without you writing the commands. It's the same server Redis also ships as a Gemini CLI extension. What you can do with it - Set and get strings with an expiry, for caching and session data - Work with hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets and streams, including stream consumer groups - Store, read, update and delete JSON documents by path - Create vector indexes and run vector and hybrid searches - Publish messages to channels, subscribe to channels or patterns and read what's queued - Scan, rename and delete keys, set expiries, and read server info, key counts and connected clients - Search the Redis documentation for answers How it connects It runs locally with uvx from the redis-mcp-server package on PyPI, for example uvx --from redis-mcp-server@latest redis-mcp-server --url redis://localhost:6379/0, or with the official mcp/redis Docker image. Point it at your database with --url (redis://, or rediss:// for TLS connections such as Redis Cloud) or with the REDIS_HOST, REDIS_PORT, REDIS_USERNAME and REDIS_PWD environment variables. With nothing set, it connects to a local Redis at 127.0.0.1:6379. Good to know - uvx needs uv installed; the Docker image needs Docker. - For read-only access, connect as a Redis ACL user without write permissions; Redis's README shows how to create one. - It supports Redis Cluster mode and Microsoft Entra ID sign-in for Azure Managed Redis. - Redis's README shows setups for Claude Desktop and VS Code with GitHub Copilot.
