Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent. It runs as Codex CLI in your terminal, as an extension in your editor, in the ChatGPT desktop app, and in the cloud from chatgpt.com, all connected by your ChatGPT account. Codex is included in ChatGPT plans. What you can add - MCP servers: local ones it starts with a command, or hosted ones at an address. Add them with codex mcp add, in the editor extension’s MCP servers settings, in the desktop app, or in ~/.codex/config.toml. The CLI, editor extension and desktop app share one setup. - Skills: folders with a SKILL.md, in ~/.agents/skills for you or .agents/skills in a repository. - Plugins from the plugin directory it shares with ChatGPT, which bring skills and connectors together. How it connects Local servers run on your computer. Hosted servers can sign in with OAuth or a bearer token, and codex mcp login handles the OAuth sign-in.
