About
Coder's built-in MCP server lets your agent work with your own Coder deployment, the self-hosted platform for cloud development environments. Your agent can list, create and build workspaces, manage templates, read and edit files inside a workspace, run commands there, and hand coding tasks to Coder Agents chats. Coder marks it as beta. What you can do with it - List, inspect and create workspaces, and start, stop or delete them with a new build - List, inspect and create templates, upload new template versions and make one active - List directories, and read, write and edit files in a workspace - Run commands in a workspace, forward ports, list its apps and read its build and agent logs - Create Coder Agents chats, send them messages, read their transcripts and status, interrupt and archive them - Look up the signed-in user and your organizations How it connects Every Coder deployment serves its own MCP server, so there's no single address to copy. Use https://<your Coder hostname>/api/experimental/mcp/http, for example https://coder.example.com/api/experimental/mcp/http, and add it as a custom MCP server in your agent. Agents that support OAuth discovery open Coder in your browser so you can sign in. For other agents, create a token in Coder under Settings > Tokens and send it in a Coder-Session-Token header. In VS Code with GitHub Copilot, run MCP: Add Server, choose From MCP Registry, search for Coder and enter your deployment's hostname. Before you connect Your Coder administrator turns the server on: start Coder with --oauth2-provider-enable --experiments=mcp-server-http, or set CODER_OAUTH2_PROVIDER_ENABLE=true and CODER_EXPERIMENTS=mcp-server-http. Run it on your machine instead With the Coder CLI signed in (coder login), run coder exp mcp server. It talks to your agent over stdio and uses your existing Coder sign-in, so your agent config needs only the command coder with the arguments exp mcp server. Good to know It acts with your Coder permissions. The available tools can change between Coder releases.
