File Conversion

File Conversion is a skill from Seth Hobson's wshobson/agents collection that teaches your agent to convert local files between common formats with tools already installed on your machine. It inspects the source, picks a supported route, writes the result to a fresh folder without touching the original, and reopens the output to check it. Files stay local: it never uploads them to a conversion service. What you can do with it - Pull the audio out of a video, or change a video's container or codec, with FFmpeg and FFprobe - Change image formats with ImageMagick, handling transparency, orientation, colour profiles and multi-frame files - Turn Markdown, HTML or DOCX into other document formats with Pandoc - Export Office documents to PDF with LibreOffice - Convert CSV to JSON with Python's standard library, keeping values such as leading zeros intact How it works - Checks the real file type rather than trusting the extension, and which tools, codecs and formats your machine supports - Writes to a new output folder and never overwrites the input or an earlier result - Verifies the output: dimensions and frames for images, streams and duration for media, pages and tables for documents, row counts and values for data - Stops and explains when a route isn't supported, instead of renaming a file or falling back to a hosted service Good to know - It brings guidance, not the converters: you need FFmpeg, ImageMagick 7, Pandoc, LibreOffice or Python 3 for the formats you use - No account or API key - PDF to editable Word isn't guaranteed, and scanned PDFs need local OCR tools - Documents with external links or macros are converted only with network access blocked and macros disabled - In Claude Code, run /plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents, then /plugin install file-conversion@claude-code-workflows - A community project by Seth Hobson, MIT licensed
