# Stack Overflow MCP Server

> Lets your agent search Stack Overflow and read full questions, answers and comments, so its fixes rest on community-verified solutions.

Stack Overflow's own MCP server, in beta. It gives your agent Stack Overflow's questions, answers and comments, so when you describe a technical problem it can find what the community has already solved and ground its answer in that. Attribution to Stack Overflow comes with everything it retrieves.

What you can do with it
- Search Stack Overflow's questions for the error or problem you're stuck on
- Pull a full thread by ID: the question, its answers (including the accepted one) and the comments
- Ground your agent's answers in community-verified solutions instead of guesswork
- Fetch current discussions rather than relying on what a model learned in training
- Build assistants, RAG tools and coding helpers that bring in Stack Overflow answers while you work

How it connects
Stack Overflow hosts it at https://mcp.stackoverflow.com. You sign in with your Stack Overflow account (free to join): the first time your agent connects, it sends you to the Stack Exchange login page, where you authorize the client and accept the terms. Clients that only run local servers can reach it through mcp-remote, as Stack Overflow's docs show.

Good to know
- It's a beta, limited to 100 calls a day per user. For more, Stack Overflow asks you to contact its sales team.
- It has two tools for now: so_search, a keyword search over questions, and get_content, which fetches questions, answers and comments by ID. Stack Overflow says more may be added.
- Both tools only read: it doesn't post, vote or edit on Stack Overflow.
