# Scite MCP

> Scite's hosted MCP server: your agent searches scientific literature and grounds its answers in Smart Citations from real papers.

Scite MCP connects your agent to Scite's index of scientific literature and its Smart Citations: citation statements taken from the full text of papers and classified as supporting, contrasting or mentioning. Your agent can find papers, see how a finding has been cited since, and answer with references you can check. Scite is part of Research Solutions.

What you can do with it
- Search scientific literature, full text included, with Boolean queries, phrase search and filters such as author, journal, date range, citation counts and editorial notices
- See whether later papers support or contrast a finding before you cite it
- Ground your agent's answers in real papers, with references you can verify
- Ask for a cited paragraph or a literature answer on a topic
- Connect your library's holdings for full-text access

How it connects
Add https://api.scite.ai/mcp as a connector or remote MCP server. Scite is also in ChatGPT's apps and Claude's connector directory. The first time, Scite asks you to sign in with your Scite account (OAuth).

Good to know
- Scite MCP needs a paid Scite plan, an active free trial or an organization's Enterprise license. Free accounts don't include MCP access, and each plan comes with a monthly allowance of MCP credits.
- In ChatGPT, type @Scite to use it. If it stops responding, reconnect it from the menu next to Scite.
- For paywalled papers, you can go deeper on the Scite site.
- Scite documents ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Cursor.
