# Microsoft Fabric MCP

> Microsoft's MCP server for Fabric: API specs and best practices for writing Fabric code, plus tools for workspaces, OneLake and pipelines.

The Microsoft Fabric MCP Server gives your agent what it needs to write production-ready code for Microsoft Fabric, plus signed-in tools for working with your Fabric resources.

What you can do with it
- Look up the OpenAPI specs and JSON item definitions for Fabric item types, such as Lakehouses, pipelines, semantic models and notebooks
- Get Fabric's best practices for pagination, throttling, retries, authentication and long-running operations, with example payloads
- Search the OneLake catalog and list your workspaces, items and capacities
- Browse, upload and download OneLake files, and read table definitions
- Create workspaces and items, and manage OneLake shortcuts and data access roles
- Manage Data Factory pipelines and Dataflow Gen2, and run M queries

How it connects
It runs on your machine with npx @microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest server start (it needs Node.js 22 or later), and also comes as a .NET tool, a Docker image and a VS Code extension. Its documentation tools read specifications bundled with the server and don't connect to Fabric; its operational tools call Fabric's APIs as the identity you configure.

Good to know
Some tools can delete files, items and whole workspaces, so connect it with an identity that has only the access you want to give it.
