# MCP n8n Server (community)

> A community MCP server that lets your agent build, validate, debug and manage workflows on your own n8n instance.

A community MCP server by Leo (leonardosepulvedat on GitHub) for running and building n8n workflows from your agent. It isn't made by n8n. It talks to your own n8n instance through n8n's public API and adds a builder loop on top: a catalog of n8n's nodes with their real parameter schemas, validation before you save, automatic repair, local snapshots with rollback, and per-node debugging.

What you can do with it
- List, read, create, update, activate and deactivate workflows, or make surgical edits to single nodes and connections
- Search the node catalog and check a workflow against the real node schemas before saving it
- Fix common mistakes automatically: missing typeVersion or positions, duplicate names, dangling connections and expression prefixes
- Find failed executions, see the failing node and the data that flowed through any node, and retry runs
- Get a health report per workflow: success rate, failures and average duration
- Search and import official n8n.io templates, or start from its bundled templates
- Trigger a webhook workflow to test it end to end
- Back up every workflow to JSON files and import them again
- With the admin toolset: manage credentials, tags, variables, users, projects and security audits

How it connects
It runs on your machine with npx -y mcp-n8n and needs two environment variables: N8N_BASE_URL, your instance's address, and N8N_API_KEY, which you create under Settings > n8n API. N8N_TOOLSETS (core, builder and admin; all by default) limits which tools it exposes. It can also run as a remote HTTP server behind a bearer token, or in Docker.

Good to know
- n8n's API is available on every self-hosted plan; on n8n Cloud it needs a paid plan.
- The API key gives full access to your n8n instance, and some tools need an owner or admin role.
- Before every update, partial edit, autofix or delete it saves a local snapshot (in ~/.mcp-n8n/snapshots), so you can diff and roll back, and even recreate a deleted workflow.
- There's no read-only mode. Set N8N_TOOLSETS=core,builder to leave out the admin tools.
