# Mapbox MCP

> Lets your agent search places, get directions and travel times, map what's reachable and draw maps, using Mapbox's location APIs.

Mapbox's own MCP server puts Mapbox's location APIs in your agent. It can look up addresses and places, plan routes with live traffic, work out travel times and reachable areas, and show the result on a map. A set of offline geometry tools handles distances, areas and buffers without calling an API.

What you can do with it
- Search for places, addresses and points of interest, or turn coordinates into an address
- Get driving, walking and cycling directions, with live traffic for driving
- Compare travel times between many places at once, or find the best order to visit up to 12 stops
- See the areas reachable within a set time (isochrones), and snap GPS traces to the road network
- Ask what's near a coordinate: the neighborhood, nearby places and what you can reach from there
- Show results on a live, interactive map in the chat, or as a static map image
- Measure distances, areas and bearings, draw buffers, and combine or compare polygons, with no API call

How it connects
Mapbox hosts it at https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp. The first time you connect, you sign in to your Mapbox account in the browser and allow access; for scripts, you can send a Mapbox access token as a bearer token instead. To run it yourself, use the npm package (npx -y @mapbox/mcp-server) with your token in MAPBOX_ACCESS_TOKEN, build it from the repository, or install Mapbox's extension package in Claude Desktop.

Good to know
You need a Mapbox account, which is free to create, and calls run under your own account. Live interactive maps show in clients that support MCP Apps, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code with GitHub Copilot and Goose; elsewhere, ask for a static map image. Run locally, --enable-tools or --disable-tools limits which tools it offers. Place details is in Public Preview.

## Install

### ChatGPT

In ChatGPT on the web: Plugins → + → Add custom MCP server, then paste https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp under Connection. Business and Enterprise plans; Pro can add read-only servers.

### Claude

In Claude (web or desktop): Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector, then paste https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp

### Muse

In Muse: In a Muse chat, ask it to create a custom connector for the MCP server at https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp. Then tap Connect on the card it shows and sign in, or add your key.

### Grok Bot

In Grok Bot: In a chat with your Bot, say "Add this MCP server: https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp". It confirms the details with you and sets it up, and the tools are ready from your next message.

### Gemini

In Gemini: At gemini.google.com: Settings → Connected Apps → Add a custom app, then paste https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp

### Grok

In Grok on the web: At grok.com/connectors: New Connector → Custom, then enter https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp and sign in if it asks.

### GitHub Copilot

Add to VS Code: vscode:mcp/install?%7B%22name%22%3A%22mapbox-mcp%22%2C%22type%22%3A%22http%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fmcp.mapbox.com%2Fmcp%22%7D
