# Kraken CLI

> Kraken's official CLI and MCP server: your agent reads market data and paper trades on Kraken, or trades live once you add API keys.

Kraken CLI is Kraken's open-source command-line tool for trading crypto, tokenized stocks (xStocks), forex and derivatives, built for AI agents. Every command returns JSON and it has a built-in MCP server, so your agent can read market data, paper trade against live prices and, once you add API keys, work with your own Kraken account. It ships as a Gemini CLI extension, and its repository includes a Claude plugin with Kraken's Agent Skills.

What you can do with it
- Get tickers, order books, recent trades and candles for Kraken markets, with no account needed
- Paper trade spot and futures against live prices, with no API keys and no real money
- Check balances and open orders, and place, amend and cancel orders once you add API keys
- Work across spot, futures, xStocks, forex and staking from one tool
- Follow its Agent Skills for trading strategies, market analysis and portfolio tasks

How it connects
- Install the kraken binary first with Kraken's one-line installer (macOS and Linux; on Windows use WSL): curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -LsSf https://github.com/krakenfx/kraken-cli/releases/latest/download/kraken-cli-installer.sh | sh
- In Gemini CLI: gemini extensions install https://github.com/krakenfx/kraken-cli. The extension and the Claude plugin start its MCP server with the market data, paper trading and feedback tools.
- In any other MCP client, run kraken mcp. kraken mcp -s all exposes every command group; dangerous calls then need confirmation unless you add --allow-dangerous.
- Market data and paper trading need no account. For your own account, set KRAKEN_API_KEY and KRAKEN_API_SECRET (and the futures keys for futures).

Good to know
- Kraken calls it experimental software. It interacts with the live Kraken exchange and can execute real financial transactions, and orders, withdrawals and transfers are irreversible once processed.
- It isn't financial advice and doesn't check whether a trade is sound. Kraken recommends paper trading first, validating orders with --validate, least-privilege API keys, small amounts, and its dead man's switch (kraken order cancel-after) for unattended sessions.
- The MCP server is local-first: any agent connected to it uses your configured Kraken account, so don't expose it outside systems you control.
- xStocks aren't available in the US, and availability of every product varies by jurisdiction. Trading derivatives and leveraged instruments involves significant risk and isn't appropriate for all investors.
