# Korean Law MCP

> Search Korean statutes, court precedents, ordinances and legal interpretations from your agent, and check its legal citations. In Korean.

Korean Law MCP is a community MCP server by chrisryugj (딴짓하는 류주임), a civil servant in Seoul, for South Korea's official legal database: the National Law Information Center Open API run by the Ministry of Government Legislation (법제처). It lets your agent search and read Korean statutes, precedents, administrative rules, local ordinances, treaties and legal interpretations, and check the legal citations in an answer against the official source. The laws, decisions and results are in Korean.

What you can do with it
- Find a statute and read an article, its addenda, or the version in force on a given date (search_law, get_law_text)
- Pull annexes and forms, such as fee or penalty tables, as Markdown (get_annexes)
- Search and read decisions across 21 domains, including court precedents, Constitutional Court decisions, tax tribunal rulings, administrative appeals and legal interpretations (search_decisions, get_decision_text)
- Run multi-step research: the hierarchy of an act and its decrees, the legal basis for a permit or penalty, dispute preparation, amendment tracking, ordinance comparison, procedures and fees, or a risk read of contract or terms text (legal_research)
- Check that cited articles and case numbers exist and match, whether a precedent has since been overruled, which version of a law applied on a date, and what cites an article (legal_analysis)
- Flag local ordinances whose parent statutes have changed since the ordinance took effect (ordinance_radar)
- Reach more specialised tools, such as customs rulings, treaties, English translations of laws and legal terms, through discover_tools and execute_tool
It expands common Korean abbreviations for laws (화관법 to 화학물질관리법, for example) and labels current and past versions.

How it connects
- Hosted: add https://mcp.gomdori.app/law, the maker's own hosted server, as a connector. Every tool only reads.
- Claude Code plugin: run /plugin marketplace add chrisryugj/korean-law-mcp, then /plugin install korean-law@korean-law-marketplace. It connects to the same hosted server, asks for your key during install, and adds a korean-law skill that tells the agent which tool to use and to verify the citations it gives.
- Local: npx --ignore-scripts --omit=optional korean-law-mcp setup sets it up for the agents you have, and the same package works as a command-line tool. A local install needs your own key.
The maker's docs cover Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Zed and Gemini CLI.

Your API key
It uses a 법제처 Open API key (OC), free from open.law.go.kr. Send it in the apikey header, or add ?oc=your-key to the address. Without one, the hosted server falls back to a shared key under a limit shared by everyone without a key. The maker notes that each person must get their own key, and a key may be used only by the person it was issued to.

Good to know
- It's a community project, not made by the Korean government or 법제처.
- It isn't legal advice. The maker says that for any decision that needs legal force, check the original text at the National Law Information Center (law.go.kr), because the tool may process and summarize what it retrieves.
- The hosted server's privacy policy is at pubax.org/law/privacy.
