# Inbox Zero

> Lets your agent search and read your Gmail or Outlook mail, save drafts, manage Inbox Zero's automation rules and check your email stats.

Inbox Zero is an open-source AI email assistant for Gmail and Outlook. Its hosted MCP server lets your agent work with the inboxes you've linked to Inbox Zero: search and read mail, create drafts, manage your automation rules and read your email statistics. It never sends email. Drafts wait in your mailbox until you send them yourself.

What you can do with it
- Search your inbox and read threads
- Draft an email or a reply, saved to your Drafts folder as a new message
- List, create, update and delete Inbox Zero's automation rules
- See email stats by period and your response times
- Work across several linked inboxes, picking one by its address

How it connects
Add https://www.getinboxzero.com/mcp to your agent as a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP). Inbox Zero documents the steps for ChatGPT (Settings, Apps, with Developer mode on), Claude (Customize, Connectors, Add custom connector), Claude Code (claude mcp add --transport http inbox-zero https://www.getinboxzero.com/mcp) and Cursor. It signs in with OAuth: sign in to Inbox Zero with Google or Microsoft, then choose Allow. API keys aren't accepted.

Good to know
- You need an Inbox Zero account with your Gmail or Outlook linked. Turn MCP on under Settings, Account, MCP, or from the consent screen when your agent first connects.
- On the consent screen you can untick write access and keep it read-only.
- To revoke access, disconnect one app, or turn MCP off to disconnect them all, in the same settings.
- Rule changes follow the same plan restrictions as Inbox Zero's public API.
- ChatGPT needs Developer mode, which depends on your ChatGPT plan. On Claude Team and Enterprise, an owner adds the connector first.
- Inbox Zero is open source and can be self-hosted. A self-hosted server uses your own address, ending in /mcp.
