# GitHub MCP Server

> Work with repositories, issues, pull requests and Actions on GitHub from your agent, through GitHub's own MCP server.

GitHub's own MCP server connects your agent to GitHub. Ask in plain words, and it reads repositories and code, manages issues and pull requests, follows Actions runs and security findings, and more, across any repository you have access to.

What you can do with it
- Browse and search code, files and commits, and understand how a project is put together
- Create, update and triage issues, and open, review and merge pull requests
- Follow GitHub Actions runs, look into failed builds and manage releases
- Review code scanning, secret scanning and Dependabot alerts
- Work with discussions, notifications, projects and gists
- Assign an issue to Copilot or ask Copilot for a review

How it connects
- Hosted: GitHub runs it at https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/. VS Code signs you in with GitHub; agents such as Claude Code send a GitHub personal access token.
- Local: run it with Docker (ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server) or as a binary. On github.com it opens a GitHub sign-in in your browser the first time, or you can give it a personal access token.
- In Gemini CLI it installs as an extension: gemini extensions install https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server
- GitHub's install guides cover Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and more.

Choose what it can do
- It starts with a default set of tools (context, repositories, issues, pull requests and users). Turn on more toolsets, such as Actions or code security, when you need them.
- Read-only when you want it: the hosted address https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/readonly, or --read-only on the local server, only offers tools that read.
- It also works with GitHub Enterprise Server and GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency (ghe.com).
