# Law Student

> Anthropic's law school study plugin: Socratic drills, case briefs, outlines, IRAC grading and bar prep, without writing your work for you.

Law Student is Anthropic's study plugin for law students, from 1L through bar prep, and part of its Claude for Legal collection. It works in learning mode, not answer mode: it drills you with questions, pushes back on loose reasoning and flags what you got wrong, but it won't write your outline, brief or essay for you. It's a study aid, not legal advice.

What you can do with it
- Get drilled Socratically on a subject: it asks, you answer, it pushes back, and it confirms or corrects only once you've worked it through
- Brief a case in your own format: it gives the template and pushes back on what you wrote
- Build or extend an outline from your class notes and casebook, with gaps marked for you to fill
- Practise MBE or essay questions for your bar exam (NextGen, the traditional UBE or a state exam), with majority and state rules labelled where they differ
- Have an IRAC practice essay graded on structure, issue-spotting, rules and analysis, with patterns tracked across sessions
- Prepare for cold calls, make and drill Leitner-style flashcards, forecast an exam from the same professor's past exams, and keep an adaptive study plan

How it works
- Start with /law-student:cold-start-interview. It asks about your classes, your bar jurisdiction and whether you'd rather be drilled or have things explained, and takes the outlines, graded essays and old exams you bring. Every other skill reads that profile.
- Skills run as /law-student:<skill>, such as socratic-drill, case-brief, outline-builder, bar-prep-questions, irac-practice, legal-writing, cold-call-prep, flashcards, study-plan and exam-forecast.
- Writing feedback is structural only: it says what's weak and never rewrites your draft.
- What it generates carries markers such as [VERIFY] and [UNCERTAIN] where you should check your casebook or a primary source.

Connectors it bundles
- CourtListener (U.S. court opinions and citation checks; public, with an optional API key) and Descrybe (primary-law research; needs your own subscription). With one connected, citations are traced to their source; without one, they're tagged for you to verify.
- Slack and Google Drive, for finding your materials.

How to install it
In Claude Code, run /plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-for-legal, then /plugin install law-student@claude-for-legal, restart Claude Code and run /law-student:cold-start-interview. It also installs in Claude Cowork.

Good to know
- It's for study and practice, not legal advice. If a question sounds like a real situation (your lease, a ticket, a friend's case), it stops and points you to legal aid, your school's clinic or a lawyer referral service.
- Check your school's honor code and your professor's AI policy before using it on graded work. Anthropic says using it where that's prohibited is an honor code violation.
- Your study profile is saved at ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/law-student/CLAUDE.md; flashcards, IRAC and writing feedback, and exam forecasts are saved in your working folder.
